Mirror Article About Markus (Includes Quotes)

Westlife’s Mark Feehily reveals he and Mariah Carey once got a Chinese takeaway in Hackney – while her stretch limo waited outside

The boyband star revealed exclusively to the Mirror what it’s really like to work with the renowned diva as he prepares to join her All I Want For Christmas Tour

He spent 14 years in one of the biggest boybands of all time, and now Westlife’s Mark Feehily is set to join forces with another global phenomenon.

Mariah Carey herself called for Mark to open the show as she brings her hugely successful All I Want For Christmas Tour to the UK this December.

Fresh from performing a gig with with another showbiz legend, actor Russell Crowe, Mark spoke exclusively to the Mirror about his friendship with Mariah, how she saved him during his darkest moments – and whether a Westlife reunion could ever be on the cards.

“She’s very funny, she’s a New Yorker and has that real ballsyness to her,” Mark said of the renowned diva.

“I went to see her in concert a few years ago at Wembley and afterwards she invited me back to her friend’s flat in Hackney.

“We ordered a Chinese takeaway and sat on the floor eating it watching TV at the same time her massive white stretch limo was parked outside.

“It was an amazing moment like: ‘Is this actually happening?'”

Mark added: “I know she loves the glitz and glamour but behind it all she loves taking her heels off and getting down to earth.

“Some people say don’t meet your idols, but I have to say that wasn’t the case with her.”

Mariah, and her music, clearly mean a great deal to Mark, as he credits her for helping him come to terms with his sexuality as a teenager.

“During the darker times when I was coming to terms with who I was there were certain artists that I’d go to my room, shut the door and turn the lights off and just blast my hi-fi system – and Mariah was one of the artists I played the most.

“In my mid teens I realised I was gay but I was scared. I used her music as an escape during those times.”

Mark finally got to meet his childhood hero in 2000 at the height of Westlife’s success, when she duetted with the boys for a cover of the Phill Collin’s classic Against All Odds.

“Westlife were in Jakarta, Indonesia, doing a gig. I got a knock at my hotel room door and it was Nicky [Byrne] and Kian [Egan], they literally close-lined me onto the floor and started screaming,” said Mark.

“I was like, ‘What the hell is going on?'”

“Louis (Walsh) had just called them to tell me that a duet with Mariah had been arranged.”

Days later the boys were flown to Italy to meet her and record the song – but not before Mark made a fleeting trip back to see his parents at his childhood home in Sligo, Ireland.

While he was there he got a surprise phone call from the legend herself.

“My mum came into the living room in the house that I grew up in and said, ‘Mark, Mariah Carey is on the phone for you.’

“The history started from there and we’ve seen each other through the years since and she’s always been really nice to me and kind about my voice,” he added.

Now Mark is thrilled to have the chance to work with his idol once again.

“It’s so exciting for me. It’s a huge honour to be part of it.

“People have been waiting for her to do her Christmas stuff in the UK for years,” he said.

Mark revealed he will also be releasing a festive album of his own this winter, something he’s always wanted to do.

Though Westlife had their fair share of Christmas number ones – “and missed out one year because of Bob the Builder,” joked Mark – with I have A Dream being one of their biggest-selling hits.

Speaking of his former bandmates, Mark revealed it’s been a while since they were last together.

“The fact that we haven’t seen each other or been in the same room since the band ended isn’t a bad thing, it’s a natural progression,” said Mark.

“Some of my family members I haven’t seen in years but it doesn’t mean I don’t love them.

“We were so heavily in each others pockets it’s natural to give each other space. The fact that we’ve had some time away from each other will help keep the love.

“This space will allow Westlife to be something that could be revisited in the future when the time is right.”

On the subject of a future reunion, Mark said: “Never say never.

“Westlife was everything. We didn’t have a chance to breathe, Westlife consumed our lives but it was fantastic and rightly so.”

“There’s potential for Westlife down the line but it’s not something I’m ready for now.”

Mark made 14 pop albums with the boys during their chart-topping career and went on to release his own solo album Fire in 2015, which he also co produced.

Since then Mark’s kept away from the limelight, although he reveals just last weekend he got a call from Russell Crowe’s band Indoor Garden party asking for him to play a gig with them at Dublin’s Olympia.

“We has just three days to learn this really song written by Russell,” said Mark,

“It was a mental three days but to perform with such a superstar was just great.

“I’d been doing some refurbishment to my house in Ireland so I had to shave my big beard off and get stage ready,” he joked.

Mark will be back in action this December as he joins Mariah Carey for her exclusive UK dates.

The All I Want For Christmas tour will be hitting Manchester Arena on the 10th December and London’s The O2 on the 11th.

Tickets on sale from Ticketmaster and AXS .

We can’t wait to see the man himself announcing the news, but the following article includes quotes of him so it all looks good. WHOOP WHOOP! 😁✨

Mariah Carey ISN’T a diva and once ate a Chinese sitting on the floor of my East London flat, claims Westlife’s Mark Feehily

Westlife star Mark Feehily has lifted the lid on extraordinary nights with his superstar pal Mariah Carey as he prepares to join her on her epic Christmas tour in December

By Sarah Tetteh

WESTLIFE’s Mark Feehily has revealed Mariah Carey once ate Chinese food sitting on the floor of his Hoxton flat – and isn’t a diva at all.

The Irish singer, 37, who is making a comeback after he was asked to be Mimi’s Special Guest on her epic Christmas tour in December, gave an incredible insight to what hanging out with the star off-stage is really like.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, Mark, said: “They say never meet your idols – but this couldn’t be more opposite for Mariah.

“The last time I went to see Mariah she was playing in Wembley.

“Afterwards we went to a friend’s apartment in Hackney.

“We literally ordered a Chinese and sat on the floor eating our takeaway.

“So we were sitting on the floor, eating our Chinese and drinking champagne in a flat in London, discussing what was going on on the telly and having a laugh.

“Her super stretch white limo was parked outside the block of flats. Next to all the other cars!

“To me that’s a good example of who she is, the biggest selling female superstar of all time, a massive diva, she loves all the fabulous life of course but at same time she’s very down to earth and not afraid to hang out in her mates flat and have a Chinese and a bit of a laugh.”

The pair met in 1999 when she recorded duet Against All Odds with Westlife, and have remained friends ever since.

Mark, who has kept a low profile since Westlife split five years ago, been quietly working on new material for next year, when he got the call to be part of Mariah’s epic show.
He said: ‘’I’m beaming. Doing a Christmas record is an idea I’ve had for a long time.”

He said: “Then when I got the call and the opportunity to be the special guest on the Mariah show it felt like the perfect opportunity to put this idea into action – at the biggest Christmas event in the pop world this year.”

Mark has turned his life around after reaching his lowest point when Westlife split, at the same time he was nursing heartbreak from separating from his fiancée.
He recalled: “So Westlife ended and my seven year relationship ended all at once. That was a tough and dark time. There no aftercare. It’s like ‘thanks for selling 55million albums, now bye!’ It’s tough.”

Mark told how he took time away from the spotlight to rebuild his confidence and got therapy.

After quietly plugging away with new material, he got the call he had dreamed of from their mutual gigs agent saying Mariah wanted him on the tour.
He added: “This Mariah gig is the icing on the cake.”

UK dates for the Mariah Carey: All I Want For Christmas Is You tour include Sunday 10 December at the Manchester Arena and Monday 11 December at the O2, London.

Time can be the enemy
When you’re locked in a world of pain
Days go floating by
And it just doesn’t change
It just stays the same
Then you came along
And showed me how to start
Now the sun shines in my heart
The sun shines in my heart

I was so lost, but now I’m found
The song they used to sing
On a sunday afternoon
Love was my alibi
For all the life lost
Now you made love my reason
You made love my truth
And the sun shines in my heart

Time is now a friend to me
You make me feel adored
When I look into your eyes
It’s like I’ve never been
Never been loved before
Then you came along and showed me how to start
The sun shines in my heart

I was so lost but now I’m found
The song they used to sing
On a sunday afternoon
Love was my alibi
For all the life lost
Now you made love my reason
You made love my truth
You made love my truth
And the sun shines in my heart

GAZE LGBT Film Festival Launches Silver Anniversary Programme in Celebration of 25th Year

Katie McNeice

The 2017 edition of the festival was revealed with a lively launch party hosted by Lead Sponsor Accenture at The Dock, Accenture’s multi-disciplinary research and incubation hub at 7 Hanover Quay, yesterday, June 15th.

The festival runs for the August Bank Holiday weekend at Light House Cinema, Smithfield.

Speaking at the programme launch were ‘Handsome Devil’ writer/director John Butler, Festival Director Noel Sutton, Programmer Roisín Geraghty, Chairperson Mick Connell and Head of Inclusion and Diversity at Accenture Ireland, Dr. Michelle Cullen.

Musician Markus Feehily also performed ‘The Crying Game’ at the launch, highlighting the special retrospective screening of Neil Jordan’s classic film that will take place during the festival.

In celebrating its 25th year, the GAZE Film Festival 2017 celebrate Ireland’s LGBT journey over the past quarter century, and the role that storytelling has played in this historic narrative.

The festival will open with triumphant documentary ‘The 34th’, which tells the story of the driven and dedicated people who formed Marriage Equality in Ireland, and developed it into a highly effective grassroots force with one clear goal in mind – the extension of Civil Marriage to same sex couples.

In the wake of Brexit, a cornerstone of the programme is the British LGBT Film Focus, kindly supported by the British Council. With the aim of strengthening cultural ties with our closest neighbours, GAZE 2017 looks at how we can continue to develop artistic relations with the United Kingdom. Not only that, but it is very significant that in this year the UK is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality.

The British series includes ‘Young Soul Rebels’ and ‘Queerama’, which document British queer history, and films like ‘The Book of Gabrielle’ and ‘The Dark Mile’, which reflect on contemporary LGBT life in the UK.

This year’s Saturday Night Centrepiece screening will showcase ‘Tom of Finland’, a timeless biopic of a world famous cult figure. ‘Tom of Finland’ brings to screen the life and work of one of the most influential and celebrated figures of twentieth century gay culture.

The film chosen to close the special 25th anniversary of the festival is ‘God’s Own Country’, one of the most talked about and critically praised LGBT film titles of 2017. Both poignant and moving, it is bracingly open-hearted, with a host of stunning standout performances, making it the must-see film of GAZE 2017.

Noel Sutton, Festival Director, GAZE:
“The whole GAZE team are extremely excited to celebrate our 25th festival and to continue to bring the best in LGBT cinema to audiences in Dublin. It’s such a remarkable honour to be Festival Director of this special festival, for this very special anniversary year.

“Without the help of our valuable supporters, including our Lead Sponsor Accenture who have been simply wonderful, we wouldn’t be able to bring such a wealth of choices to our enthusiastic audiences, many of whom travel from across the country and indeed internationally for the festival each year. We welcome all audiences to our festival to sample the eclectic programme, especially in this year when we’ll be reflecting on the journey of the LGBT community in Ireland and internationally, over the last 25 years.”

Dr Michelle Cullen, Head of Inclusion and Diversity, Accenture Ireland:
“We are incredibly proud to support the GAZE International LGBT Film Festival, now in our sixth year. Every day around the world, Accenture puts the power of diversity into action and the team at GAZE have been doing this for 25 years. Diversity makes us stronger and film is a powerful platform that connects people. The GAZE Film Festival provides this shared platform for people to watch films together to create awareness, insights, and empathy for changing attitudes in Ireland. We are delighted to support the LGBT community in telling these powerful stories through film.”
