INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT:

On how the Russell Crowe performance came along: “So I’m doing a big reinvention job in my house in Sligo and I was literally there, like beard out to here (points with his hands), like, you know, sledgehammer knocking walls and stuff and I got this phone call from a guy that used to produce a lot of Westlife songs, it was Carl Falk, and he was just like ‘Oh I’m coming to Dublin at the weekend, are you around?’. So I was like, ‘Oh, I might be actually, yeah’ and he was like ‘I just am in this band with Russell Crowe and we want you to come and sing a song with us’. So I was like, ‘Okay…’. I didn’t know what to expect or didn’t know what song they wanted me to sing, so I was like ‘Can you just send me the song?’, you know, just in case like… And they sent me the song, it’s just a beautiful song. It’s called ‘Love Was My Alibi’ and Russell Crowe actually wrote it with this guy, Carl Falk, and it was on the soundtrack to a movie that Russell Crowe directed and as I said I was a bit ‘God, what happens if the song is like really bad…’ but it wasn’t, it was amazing and I just I kind of loved it straight away and so for the next three days I was in my kitchen in Sligo, belting out the song, trying to of kinda make sure that I knew the lyrics and the arrangement and everything and I got up to The Olympia on the Sunday, a few days later, and literally performed in a band with Russell Crowe. And obviously the Russell Crowe thing was huge but there’s other actors in the band as well. There’s a guy that plays one of the characters in Family Guy, another guy that’s in X-men and like every five minutes I was like ‘Oh my God. He’s famous as well…’ you know, so it was really good, it was a really good experience.”

On whether he got any direction from Russell Crowe: “Well, I just took one look and was like ‘I better not mess this up…’ haha. To be honest with you, he’s a lovely lovely guy. I hadn’t met him before and he has a reputation of being boisterous and kinda guy you wouldn’t sort of, you know, mess around lets say, and he was just lovely. He just wanted to go to the pub and to like go on drive down the country and no kinda Hollywood kind of stuff at all. Some of the people around him actually said that he is in his comfort zone when he’s in this band and he’d sort of choose that any day over, you know, Oscars and Hollywood movies and being in LA and everything like that. He was just lovely. I can tell that he doesn’t care about being a star and he’s sort of more like just a real person. I still wouldn’t cross him though.”

With regards to his performance: “Well, before I went on stage, he kinda came over like grabbed me by the shoulders and he just said ‘You’re gonna nail it. Everyone said you were amazing at the rehearsals’ and he’s like ‘I want you to record the song. It’s gonna be like one of the biggest wedding songs of all time’ and all this kinda stuff and I was like ‘Okay… better not like mess this one up…’ so after the performance they sort of booked out a pub just by the hotel in Dublin and so everyone that was backstage was at this after show party and it was sponsored by a brand of tequila so everyone was like pretty (pausing) much enjoying themselves… and in the hallway we just kinda bumped into each other and it was kind of briefing up in one way but he just said like ‘Oh you’ve nailed it, you completely smashed it and he just kept saying that we need to get in touch, they’re coming back from LA in a few weeks and they want me to have recorded the song and staff so, yeah, who knows, crazy things happen you’ve a sledgehammer and knocking down walls in Sligo, with a beard.”

On whether he will record ‘Love Was My Alibi’: “I’d love to. Genuinely like, forget about Hollywood stars and everything, it’s a really beautiful song and as a singer that’s the kind of song that you’re always kinda look for, so I absolutely would, yeah.”

On being special guest on Mariah Carey’s tour & his Christmas Record: “That was the Sunday, on Monday then…so as I said, it was sponsored by tequila, the after show party, and so we woke up the next morning and I just looked to my phone and there was an email from my agent in London saying ‘You’re gonna be announced tomorrow as the special guest on Mariah Carey’s UK Christmas tour.’ So I was like, ‘Am I still drunk? Is this actually happening?’. But I kind of knew that it might happen for a while but I didn’t dare kinda say it to anyone in case it didn’t or whatever. So my agent really came through and he made it happen. He was in LA like literally with Mariah Carey and her manager and I was like, ‘Right so, today’s the day we’re gonna find out if it’s gonna happen’ and so it did and so I’d wanted to kinda make a Christmas record going way back even to Westlife days I sort of said to the label, ‘How about Christmas albums’ and stuff and it was something that I just always loved and it just never happened. And so when this thing got confirmed, I was like, ‘Right, this is obviously the moment where I’m gonna do my Christmas record,’ so all of a sudden I’m flying to London and I’m singing Christmas songs in September, October, you know. And I’m one of those people that says like ‘Don’t dare say the word Christmas until it’s like December’. But I’ve had to sort of forget about that for a minute. The thing about this is my first solo album was a little bit darker, a little bit more serious, I really enjoyed making it, no regrets whatsoever, but I’ve got another side to me and it’s, you know, a fun side and it’s gonna be kind of a bit of fun, a bit of festivity, definitely songs that everyone knows. There’s one or two that are slightly more obscure but I think everyone’s still gonna know them and I’m trying to pick songs as well that sort of suit my voice, sort that are more soulful so it’s really really exciting.”

About Westlife collaborating with Mariah: “Well I think it was like 2000 or 2001. I actually got tweeted the day before I finally found out it was happening, a fan tweeted me saying it was 17 years the day that ‘Against All Odds’ went number one, and it was like ‘If I only knew what I was about to be in tomorrow’, but yeah, 17 years ago, so, I mean, I actually, literally, can’t believe it is that long.”

About getting in contact with Mariah over the years: “Well it´s not like we’re bestie mates and we constantly text each other and stuff like that, whatsoever, but it´s one of those things I sort of, you know, sporadically pump into her here and there, sort of didn’t even think it would happen and then all of a sudden I’m kind of in London and during the time we were through it, I kind of became friends with some of the people around her as well and I was gonna get a text going ‘we’re going to a club tonight,’ or whatever and ‘come along’ and I wouldn’t even know and then you get there and then she’s there as well. She´s really down to earth, you know, she´s not like kind of a… uhm… fifty entourage around her and everything, like I mean if she could have it her way she probably wouldn’t have an entourage all but yeah, I’ve seen her through the years since then, you know.”

On having Chinese takeaway with her: ” have, yeah. The other day I was like, ‘Please, just, Mariah Carey, do not… like… google yourself for the next two weeks, please’. I don’t know whether she’d even like the fact that I said that story but yeah, I went to see her show in London when she was playing in Wembley and, afterwards, ’cause it wasn’t long after we worked with her, she invited us backstage to the dressing room and then she was like ‘Oh, we’re all going back to my friends” and I was like ‘Oh it’s probably some, you know, big mansion in Hampstead or something like that and we got to the address and it’s like a big huge block of highway flats and literally her big massive stretch limo was like there outside the front door and we went up and you know there was her and probably ten other people and everyone was just there sitting around on the floor and ordering chinese and there was a bit of champagne so it wasn’t like, you know, completely normal, like, you know…but yeah, I mean, any kind of encounter I’ve had with her it’s been sort of more like that than you know kind of wrapped in cotton wool.”

About whether he’s getting to sing with her: “Look, I mean, of course I would love to but it’s certanly not, I mean it’s not part of the deal. Who knows, I mean, we’re gonna be in the same room together and we did have this big number one, you know, Westlife and her, so who knows… I mean, it’d be fantastic you know, I never say never, I mean, ten days ago if you said I was gonna be on stage with Russell Crowe and then, you know, opening for Mariah Carey I wouldn’t have believed it so who knows…”

About how is everything else going: “Fantastic! Really good, I mean, I’ve been doing this big refurbish of my house in Sligo I keep talking about and it’s been really nice, you know, kind of coming away from the entertainment industry and doing something that I love first of all and then you know, I’ve always kind of loved doing that stuff and yeah so I’ve been doing that and it’s been everyday meeting my builder, getting stuck in and literally we we’re just joking out there and you know, we’re talking about Mariah Carey and a few days before that I was like picking radiators and stuff, you know, but that’s varieties and spice in life, you know…

About whether he’s happy in his love life: “Yeah, 100%, I’m absolutely happy, nearly four years now in a relationship and everything is great. Actually, I was thinking about this… You know when you’re coming up to do an interview, sort of you don’t think about stuff and then you start like, ‘Right, ok, where am I?’ and I’m actually quite happy. I’m really really happy and things are good and good things are happening. It’s good, you know, all of the stars are kind of aligning at the moment and life is great, yeah.”
